Grown Up In Britain Exhibition
Grown Up in Britain, was a major 6 month exhibition, which took place in The Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry from 2022-2023. The exhibition featured many images that Lucy either appeared in, had shot or were from her family archive which dates back to the 1950's. She also had on display, some of her 90's club wear which presented itself as a bag in the shape of a speech bubble.
The exhibition was curated by the Museum of Youth Culture, who Lucy has been working with for the past ten years.
There were many photographers involved in the exhibition such as Normski, Ken Russell, Tony Davis, Neil Massey, Peter Walsh
There were several facets to the exhibition including a teenager's bedroom. A photo of Lucy in her self constructed rave bedroom was exhibited. The rave bedroom was a room constructed of a montage of rave flyers and photographs. Lucy stands in front of the camera, photo taken by her friend: Kelllie Finnegan. Rather than wear jewellery, she constructs a heart on her chest, made from sequins. She wears sunglasses on her head, which was popular style with a lot of ravers in the 90's.
Lucy's images of fellow ravers were not only taken to capture the hedonism of the 90's. The images had a dual purpose and she was actually also taking images to pass her GCSE's and A level photography course at school! Being a teenage photographer, she processed the negatives and printed the images in the school darkroom. She then often constructed photo montages and used paint, glitter and fabric to add a 3d texture to the imagery and to exaggerate the extravagance of the clothes worn by the ravers. In 1995, as less raves were happening outside, dance clubs witnessed more playfulness with regard to dress sense. There was a merging of lots of different culture, which helped define club culture.
